Northern Territory
The Northern Territory government reports that during 2002, the Territory produced 17.7 million tonnes of greenhouse gases. This represented around 3.3 per cent of total national emissions.
The government also reports that stationary energy accounts for approximately 4.0 million tonnes or 23 per cent of all greenhouse gas emissions in the Northern Territory. In 2002 this equated to around 7.5 tonnes of CO2 per capita.
Most of the Northern Territory’s electricity is generated using natural gas resulting in approximately 40 per cent lower greenhouse gas emissions than coal.
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics 49.2 per cent of homes in the Northern Territory have insulation (ABS rpt 4602.0 29).
The Northern Territory Strategy for Greenhouse Action 2006 sets out practical and achievable greenhouse initiatives – initiatives that encourage behavioural change, support research, and build partnerships. For example, by 2011the government plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from electricity consumption in Government buildings by 10 per cent.
The Northern Territory government is currently trialing the experimental tropical version of AccuRate to better address its climatic conditions.
